USGS Quadrangle map

A key component of the survey is mapping defining features of a battlefield and delineating boundaries. A USGS quadrangle is needed for this task. Paper maps may obtained from the US Geological Survey. Two paper copies of each quadrangle needed may be ordered using a special account set up for the survey. Please request the account number from your point of contact when you are ready to order your maps. Additional copies should be ordered directly from USGS. The USGS Map Finder can be helpful in determining which quadrangles are needed. Digital versions(digital ratser graphs or DRGs) of any quadrangles for the purpose of this survey will be provided to you free of charge.

A digital quad, or Digital Raster Graph (DRG), can be used with the Digitizer software provided to every surveyor. Survey contract coordinators should identify all of the quadrangle maps needed in digital and/or paper format and make that request all at once. The digital files are in Tiff format (a graphic file format) and have associated "tfw" or world files that have location information. Once requested, the files will be made accessible on our FTP (File transfer protocol) site and you will be notified via email with directions for the download process. If you cannot retrieve files using FTP, please indicate that you would prefer a CD. CDs will not be created for single Quadrangles.

  Digital Survey Form

Another item needed by surveyors is the Digital Survey Form. The NPS prefers that surveyors use digital survey form to enter the survey form data. The program can then produce the completed paper survey form for submission in addition to the file itself that will become a part of our extensive database for this study. The Digital Survey Form is in Microsoft Access 97 format, but you do not need to have Access to use it. It can be installed on any PC running Windows 95 or Windows 98.

If there are multiple surveyors in your state needing copies of the Digital Survey Form, please ask your state's survey contract coordinator to make the request for the necessary number of copies. Once requested, the files will be made accessible on our FTP (File transfer protocol) site and you will be notified via email with directions for the download process. If you cannot retrieve files using FTP, please indicate that you would prefer a CD.

  Equipment

The NPS has a limited number of laptop computers and GPS receivers (Trimble Geo Explorer IIIs) available for use by surveyors. Prior to borrowing equipment surveyors must submit their Defining Features list to their staff Point of Contact. On this webpage you may request equipment for a specified time period and submit the required documentation. The NPS staff Point of Contact will then determine the availability of the equipment and contact you directly.

  New Associated Historic Property Submission

If your research indicates that a historically significant property that falls within your geographic scope was not assigned to you but ought to be surveyed, basic information may be submitted via the website for review by the NPS staff. If the site is approved it will be assigned a survey code and you will be notified about proceeding with the survey.

Do not begin surveying a suggested site until your point of contact has provided you with a survey code.

  New Battle Submission

If your research indicates that a documented military event that falls within your geographic scope is not included in either the survey list or the non-survey list, basic information may be submitted via the website for review by the NPS staff.
Please check the site lists thoroughly before submitting a new battle.

All new battles will receive a rank of D by default and thus not be eligible for survey initially. Periodically, submitted sites with be reviewed by the advisory committee to receive an official rank. Those that receive a rank of A-C will be assigned a survey code and arrangements will be made for surveying the battle.

Do not begin surveying a suggested battle until your point of contact has provided you with a survey code.
