Statement of Significance (as of designation - May 21, 1963):
Completed in 1817, this cobblestone and cement dam is one of the first major irrigation-engineering projects on the Pacific Coast of the United States. Water from the 220' long, 13' thick dam irrigated the fields around the Mission of San Diego.
