Statement of Significance (as of designation - June 2, 1978):
This handsome Art Deco building, erected in 1921 and enlarged 1929-1931, houses one of the nation's most important securities exchanges. Tracing its origins to 1849, when the discovery of gold in California precipitated an increase in securities trading, it remained an outdoor "curb" market --"the most picturesque, exciting, and incomprehensible segment of American business" --with little formal organization until it moved to this building.
