Statement of Significance (as of designation - October 3, 1985):
This dry lakebed provided a natural laboratory for flight testing of aircraft that were on the cutting edge of aerospace and aviation technology. It is the primary resource associated with establishment of Edwards Air Force Base, the world's premier flight testing and flight research center.
