Statement of Significance (as of designation - June 23, 1965):
Jane Addams (1860-1935), American social reformer and pacifist who received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1931, moved into Hull House in 1889 and worked here to provide a wide variety of social services to Chicago's poor. Her settlement-house program gained international recognition.
