Statement of Significance (as of designation - April 15, 1970):
An outstanding example of a large Southern frame plantation house, in seven-part form, built for Edward Lloyd IV, a wealthy landowner. It illustrates the transition in style from late Georgian to early Federal architecture. Nearby is the orangerie, with a rare example of an 18th-century central heating system.
