Statement of Significance (as of designation - August 6, 1998):
This is the only surviving station of a network of nearly two hundred that encompasses the entire lifesaving service history; the early volunteer efforts, the United States Life-Saving Service, and the United States Coast Guard. Because there was no interruption in service here from 1854, when the station was founded, until 1932, when it was discontinued, the well-used buildings retain a high degree of integrity in design, materials, and workmanship.
