Statement of Significance (as of designation - September 25, 1997):
The College of Medicine of Maryland, constructed in 1812, is a handsome neoclassical structure fronted by a Doric portico nad covered with a saucer dome. It is the oldest medical school building in continuous use in the United States, and contains the nation's oldest anatomical theater where students could watch operations performed by the faculty.

The campus has received a Save America’s Treasures grant and is raising matching funds to assist in ongoing tabilization/renovation. Approximately $13-$15 million is needed to restore the building to its original condition. Plans are to complete the restoration by the campus bicentennial in 2017.
