Statement of Significance (as of designation - December 9, 1997):
The S.S. ANTONIO LOPEZ is significant as the most important blockade runner and shipwreck of the Spanish-American War. Although several Spanish vessels were lost in the conflict between Spain and the United States, the ANTONIO LOPEZ is the only shipwreck in the Caribbean from that war that has been scientifically located and investigated. The ship is also significant in marine engineering and architecture of the late nineteenth century, with its steel construction and electric lighting system.
