Statement of Significance (as of designation - December 30, 1970):
One of H. H. Richardson's finest and earliest works (1874-77), done in the Romanesque style for which he became famous. John La Farge executed the interior murals and some of the stained glass.

In 2004, the church received a federal Save America's Treasures matching grant for ($450,000) to clean and stabilize 9,500 square feet of painting by John La Farge and his associates in the central crossing tower. The paint is lifting from the walls, and in some places has been painted over.
