Statement of Significance (as of designation - November 7, 1973):
The Georgia State Capitol, constructed between 1884 and 1889 and still in use is the perfect expression of the "New South", as Atlanta considered herself to be after Reconstruction. The building, Neoclassical in form with a gilded dome, follows architectural precedents established by the U.S. Capitol.
