Statement of Significance (as of designation - February 27, 2003):
Built between 1806 and 1807, Adena is an outstanding example of the domestic architecture of Benjamin Henry Latrobe, generally acknowledged as the first professional architect in the United States. Situated on three hundred acres and retaining three garden terraces and a number of outbuildings, it is the only surviving Latrobe country house and one of only three American Latrobe houses still standing.
