Statement of Significance (as of designation - November 11, 1971):
From about 1740 to 1779, this two story saltbox-style frame house belonged to Matthew Thornton (c. 1714-1803), physician, politician, and jurist. Thorton signed the Declaration of Independence for New Hampshire and served in the Continental Congress.
