Statement of Significance (as of designation - November 7, 1973):
An Italian Renaissance villa built from 1855-60, this structure offers a striking contrast to Georgia's Early Classical Revival and Greek Revival ante-bellum mansions. Among its interior features are curved marble stairs and a 50-foot ballroom.

Condition:
Hay House is physically sound and as withstood recent tornadoes without incident. Hay House is open 6 days a week as a house museum and receives 18,000-20,000 visitors annually.

There are no changes to the landmark.
