Statement of Significance (as of designation - November 13, 1966):
From 1890 until his death, this two story frame building was the home of Eugene Victor Debs (1855-1926), the founder of industrial unionism in the United States and the Socialist Party's Presidential candidate in five Presidential elections (1900-1920, except 1916). "While there is a lower class, I am in it; while there is a criminal element, I am of it; while there is a soul in prison, I am not free" was Debs' credo.
