Statement of Significance (as of designation - November 11, 1971):
From 1836 until his death, this was the home of William Gilmore Simms (1806-1870), an important literary figure in the ante-bellum period. The brick house which he built here in 1867 was originally a one-story structure, to which his descendents added a second story.
