From about 1919 to 1924, this was the residence of DuBose Heyward (1885-1940), author the novel PORGY (1925), which inspired the famed folk opera PORGY AND BESS. Heyward chose as the setting for his novel the Black community of Charleston; the protagonist is a crippled beggar whose struggle is treated with sensitivity and insight by the author, himself a victim of polio.
