Statement of Significance (as of designation - February 17, 2006):
The Farnsworth House is nationally significant as an example of modern architecture and as an exemplary work of renowned architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. It is one of the most famous examples of modernist domestic architecture and was considered unprecedented in its day. This building is one of the most frequently cited examples of mid-20th century attempts to reduce architecture to as few elements as possible, while also increasing the transparency of the building.
