Statement of Significance (as of designation - November 11, 1971):
This property's spacious grounds constitute the first landscaped gardens in America, with molded terraces descending to two butterfly shaped lakes. The original house was burned by Union troops in 1865, and only one wing, dating from 1755, survives. Middleton Place was the estate of its namesake family, prominent members of government in Colonial times, including Arthur Middleton (1742-1787), member of the Continental Congress (1776-78, 1781-83), where he signed the Declaration of Independence.

Condition:
New development along the Ashley river is impinging on the historic viewshed of the National Historic Landmark.

Four developers and one private owner, near the landmark, have granted the Middleton Place Foundation scenic easements to protect a portion of the view shed of the property. (Updated 9/03 & 9/04)
