Statement of Significance (as of designation - July 8, 2001):
First reported in 1938, this site deep within the Coso Mountains is one of the most spectacular petroglyph areas known in the western United States, exhibiting more than 20,000 designs. It represents at least two cultural phases. Big and Little Petroglyph Canyons, originally designated on July 19, 1964, have been incorporated into this larger National Historic Landmark as part of Coso Rock Art District.
