Statement of Significance (as of designation - November 13, 1966):
Dating from the 1870s-'80s, this is the birthplace of California's petroleum industry and the first commercially successful well in the State. Because of training in the Pico Canyon field, oil industry pioneers made California the second oil-producing state in the U.S. in the first two decades of the 20th century.
