Statement of Significance (as of designation - November 11, 1971):
The district is composed of architecturally harmonious and spatially related neoclassical buildings that form one of the most dignified college campuses in the Nation.

The college applied for a 2003 Save America's Treasures grant to install fire suppression and alarm systems in three buildings that form the Colonnade: Washington Hall, Payne Hall, and Robinson Hall. These buildings, with the Lee Chapel, are at the heart of the National Historic Landmark historic district.
