Statement of Significance (as of designation - December 8, 1976):
Established in 1859, this is the oldest functioning botanical garden in the country. Its founder, Henry Shaw (1800-1889), intended the 75 acre garden to serve two functions: to provide the public with the ornamental delights of plants as well as educating the average citizen in basic botany and horticulture; and to serve the pure or basic science objective of conducting botanical research according to the highest standards of the discipline.

There are no threats to the landmark.

Through a project known as the Doris Waters Lichtenstein Victorian Garden District, the Garden was able to complete an upgrade/replacement of 750 feet of asphalt paths with exposed aggregate & brick paths. In addition a Pin Cushion Garden was created in this area. As a separate project the Maze in this area was replanted. The Garden is completing the final stage of a renovation of the Shoenberg Administration Building which includes the installation of a 4 pipe mechanical system with a central chiller and boiler replacing a mix of boilers, window AC/heaters as well as thru the wall units. Garden sculpture is receiving conservation. The Garden is currently developing construction documents for the renovation of the Ridgway Center parking lots with the work being performed in three phases starting in October 2008 thru September 2010. This work is being funded in part through ISTEA.
