Statement of Significance (as of designation - October 9, 1960):
Erected in 1794-95, the Royal Presidio Chapel of San Carlos de Borromeo is the only remaining presidio chapel in California and the sole existing structure of the original Monterey Presidio. The State church of Spanish California, Royal Spanish Governors worshipped and State ceremonies were held here.

Condition:
The facade is suffering from the effects of the marine environment and rising damp.

The National Center for Preservation Technology and Training provided a grant for stone conservation but it did not fund the completion of the conservation work. A historic structures report has been completed but seismic retrofit is needed. The monies collected by the congregation so far have funded electrical and other systems repairs but do not cover the $200,000 for additional needed work.
