Statement of Significance (as of designation - November 28, 1972):
The Assembly of the Three Lower Counties (Delaware) met here from 1704 until May 1777. The first State legislature under the newly framed state constitution met here on October 28, 1776.

Condition:
The courthouse is in good condition.

The landmark received the AASLH Leadership in History Award for restoration, 2008; Underground Railroad Network to Freedom designation as a site; and state-funded restoration was completed in 2007.
