Statement of Significance (as of designation - May 28, 1987):
Completed in 1858, this massive stone building was designed by the Midwestern architect who also did such masterpieces as the Old Illinois State Capitol. An outstanding example of the Egyptian Revival style, it exemplifies the antebellum penal reform movement in the United States.

Condition:
The museum is suffering water damage in the basement that may affect the integrity of the structure. Some of the stone in the basement foundation is deteriorating. This appears to be due at least partly to improper drainage, and may also be partly due to a high water table, The building also needs some tuckpointing, window recaulking, and a new furnace, along with other minor repairs.

Tthe museum has received a SAT grant to address the moisture and drainage problems and perform the other actions described above. Preliminary plans and detailed cost estimates have been made.
