Statement of Significance (as of designation - November 28, 1972):
Site of a battle (29 August 1779) that was a result an expedition lead by Maj. Gen. John Sullivan and was the major American military effort of 1779. General George Washington ordered the Sullivan expedition as a counter-offensive against the Iroquois, who, as allies of the British, in 1778 had raided settlements in the Mohawk Valley of New York and in western Pennsylvania.

Citizen and ABPP report that the property has been transferred from the state to Chemung County.

Recommendation/Change since last report:
After a visit with Paul Hawke, American Battlefield Protection Program, the region believes it would be very beneficial to all property owners in the Newtown Battlefield NHL to have assistance from Paul to set a course of protection for the lands involved in the battle. Paul’s visit to the area in May hopefully can be the catalyst for such an effort.
