Statement of Significance (as of designation - November 5, 1961):
This is the only original stage station remaining on the Butterfield Overland Mail Route (1858-61), which operated between San Francisco and two eastern terminals, St. Louis and Memphis. The first truly transcontinental stagecoach service, the Butterfield line was chartered after it became apparent completion of the rail line connecting the two coasts would be delayed indefinately. The outbreak of the Civil War brought an end to this venture.
