Statement of Significance (as of designation - November 13, 1966):
Constructed in 1863, this three-masted, iron-hulled vessel is the only extant Alaskan salmon vessel of its type. STAR OF INDIA was used to carry fishermen and cannery employees to the Alaskan fisheries. She is now the oldest iron-hulled merchantman afloat in the world.
