Statement of Significance (as of designation - December 14, 1990):
Built in 1903, Government House is the most visible and enduring land-based symbol of the projection of American naval and diplomatic might in the South Pacific. Originally the residence of the Commandant of US Naval Station, Tutuila, Government House became the US's sole diplomatic outpost in the South Pacific in peacetime and through two world wars. It was turned over to the government of American Samoa in 1951. Located on the magificent harbor of Pago Pago, the edifice now serves as the official residence for the civilian governors of American Samoa.

Condition:
Deterioration, water damage, and termite infestation continue to impact threaten the material integrity of the building The foundation is seriously impaired by rot and rusting of the steel beams. Repairs over the years have only temporarily addressed the problems and improper repairs have increased the damage and accelerated the deterioration. Few of the recommendations for preservation contained in a 1993 Condition Assessment Report have been carried out. Moisture problems continue, landscape features, both man-made and natural, have not been maintained. Recently proposed rehabilitation of the building likely will cause a loss of material integrity.

Recommendation/Change since last report:
Funds should be sought for further stabilization, repairs and rehabilitation of Government House, which meet the Secretary of the Interior's Standards for the Treatment of Historic Properties
