Statement of Significance (as of designation - July 17, 1991):
This was the home of Sarah Orne Jewett (1849-1909), who lived and wrote in this house for most of her life. She wrote over 20 novels and collections of short stories that remain quintessential in their description of the lives and landscapes of rural Maine in the late 19th century. In addition to being valued for the historical perspectives it contains, Jewett's writing is of interest to scholars of women's literature who have explored the matriarchal and mythic qualities of her work.
