Statement of Significance (as of designation - November 7, 1973):
Caleb Cushing, President Tyler's commissioner to China, negotiated the 1844 Treaty of Wanghia, securing for the United States diplomatic and trade privileges by opening five major ports, establishing consular offices, and paving the way for American interests in the Far East. Cushing's three-story brick house is a fine example of New England Federal architecture.
