Statement of Significance (as of designation - May 30, 1974):
Constructed in 1849 and described as castellated Gothic, the building is considered one of the finest examples of Gothic Revival architecture in the country. By the 1930s, it was a symbol of the continuity of the political domination of Louisiana's traditional social and economic elite over the State's fortunes.
