Statement of Significance (as of designation - May 15, 1975):
Completed in 1890, this is one of the few 19th-century glass-covered areas in America--an engineering marvel in its day. The building is shaped around a grand esplnaade 300' long, surrounded by 5 tiers of galleries, crowned by a skylight of glass and steel 60' wide, 290' long and 104' above the ground.
