Statement of Significance (as of designation - April 19, 1993):
From 1926 to 1966, this was the home and workplace of Wharton Esherick (1887-1970), an artist and craftsman who applied the principles of modern scupture to all his work, including furniture and architectural designs. In doing so, he bridged the gap between the fine arts and the decorative arts. His impulse to produce hand-done works with great respect for the material is also rooted in the Arts & Crafts Movement which swept England and America at the end of the 19th century.
