Statement of Significance (as of designation - May 5, 1977):
The District includes the environs in which Martin Luther King, Jr., grew up from his birth in 1929 until he left Atlanta. His birth home, grave, and the church in which he served as assistant pastor are within the district. The District was established as a unit of the National Park System in 1980.

Condition:
Concerns that the built environment is in a slow decline. Funding and partnerships with other preservation organizations are being developed to reverse this trend.
