Statement of Significance (as of designation - November 7, 1973):
Discovered in 1828, this mine was associated with the discovery of gold in Georgia. The subsequent gold rush drove the Cherokees from their land and ultimately led to their expulsion to land west of the Mississippi River.

Condition:
The landmark is currently undeveloped, wooded and in good condition. However, one of the buildings is in poor condition and collapse is likely.

Re-evaluation of the National Register boundary based on archival research and field reconnaissance. Assessment of the current condition and contributing elements. These have taken place recently. A planned revision of the NR nomination forms is underway.
