Statement of Significance (as of designation - May 30, 1974):
Founded in 1895, this was one of the leading institutions in the settlement house movement in the U.S. Lillian Wald, suffragist and pacifist, lived and worked here for nearly 40 years. She founded both this famous settlement house and a city-wide visiting nurse service.
