Statement of Significance (as of designation - December 8, 1976):
The primary significance of this Landmark is the integrity of the canal itself and the ambience of its environment. While most of the 19th century canals in the United States have disappeared, the Delaware Canal remains intact, with all of its engineering and operational structures, for all but two to three miles of its original sixty mile length. Completed in the early 1830s, it was part of the state's extensive early 19th century canal system, and its particular purpose was to transport anthracite coal mined in the Lehigh Valley to markets throughout Pennsylvania and New York. When the canal was returned to the state by the Lehigh Coal and Navigation Company in 1931, Pennsylvania developed it as a state park.

Condition:
The canal suffered through three floods of the Delaware River. The floods occured in October /04, April /05, June /06. Damage is estimate to be $40,000,000. Repairs have begun funding is through FEMA with a state 25% match.

$40,000 Save America's Treasures Grant to be used to restore a camelback bridge. $2,500,000 funding through state legislature for repairs/dredging. $30,000,000 through FEMA for flood repairs. $10,000,000 from state for flood repairs.
