Statement of Significance (as of designation - January 3, 2001):
The Quarry Visitor Center at Dinosaur National Monument is one of the four most significant structures constructed by the National Park Service as part of its Mission 66 program. Seated on top of a bed of fossilized remains, this building illustrates the concept of locating the newly developed "visitor centers" directly at the cultural or natural resource. The building also shows the Park Service's use of modern architecture in the post World War II period.

The building continues to suffer structural damage due to the movements of the expansive clay soils on which it is located. The structural steel supports over the fossils have separated from several of their support columns, and the floor in the bookstore area has cracked and heaved approximately 8 inches. All door frames in the building have moved, which requires yearly correction to make the doors function properly. The National Park Service completed a Historic Structures Report (HSR) in 2003 that documents the damage to the building and provides recommendations for repair and rehabilitation.

The visitor center has been closed, as it is considered unsafe. A new facility will be built and the center's anticipated re-opening is 2011.
