Statement of Significance (as of designation - May 30, 1974):
The first State-supported military college, VMI was formally organized in 1839. Often called the "West Point of the South", the institute provided leaders for the Confederate Army, including "Stonewall" Jackson, and for the two World Wars, including George C. Marshall.
