Statement of Significance (as of designation - January 15, 1975):
George D. Birkhoff is regarded by many as the leading American mathematician during the first quarter of the 20th century. He began teaching at Harvard in 1912 and during his career earned practically every honor available in his fields. Among his spectacular accomplishments was to solve Poincare's "last theorem," which his predecessor had posited but had been unable to answer.
