Statement of Significance (as of designation - May 15, 1975):
Workshop of Thomas Day, early 19th-century free African-American cabinetmaker who achieved recognition for the superior quality of his craftmanship.
Condition:
The building lost its roof and interior wooden detailing from a fire. The roof has been replaced, and restoration of the interior is proceeding.
The State Legislature granted $40,000 for ongoing interior structural restoration. In 2000, the property also received a Save America's Treasures matching grant for $250,000 to complete restoration.
