Statement of Significance (as of designation - April 27, 1992):
With its steep roof containing two floors in the attic, three-room floor plan and massive internal fireplace, this 1736 colonial house preserves rare evidence of early cultural traditions once prevalent in Pennsylvania and in other areas settled by Germans. The house was also the site of frequent evangelical and political meetings held to promote understanding among colonists of different religions, cultures and races, and the Moravian school established here is recognized as one of the first interracial, nonsectarian schools in the state. Henry Antes became the Moravian Church's chief architect and builder, directing work in Pennsylvania and in North Carolina.
