Statement of Significance (as of designation - May 11, 1976):
Galveston was for many years the state's largest city, flourishing as a port, financial center and trading emporium. Many of its 19th century nabobs built impressive houses in the east end of the city. They include the ornate Bishop's Palace (1887-93) by Nicholas J. Clayton.

Condition:
Houses in the East End Historic District are generally in good repair and are protected by a local historic district designation.

Therea are no changes to the landmark at this time.
