Statement of Significance (as of designation - May 15, 1975):
In the Summer of 1839, a group of Africans successfully mutinied against the crew of the slaveship AMISTAD. Thus began the Amistad Affair (1839-1841), the foremost case in American history involving the foreign slave trade. First Church of Christ served as the center of life for the Amistad captives after the famous 1841 Supreme Court trial.
