Statement of Significance (as of designation - May 15, 1975):
Home of America's best-known and most accomplished 19th-century physicist. Rowland's most important contibution was in the area of electromagnetism, most particularly in the area of spectrum analysis. He also shaped the Johns Hopkins Physics Department into a model which spread to the other universities across the country.
