Statement of Significance (as of designation - June 29, 1989):
USS Joseph P. Kennedy, Jr., is the sole example of the GEARING class destroyer preserved today in the United States. Although none in the GEARING class were built in time to see much World War II service, the class represented the ultimate stage in World War II destroyer design.
