Statement of Significance (as of designation - May 11, 1976):
This Greek Revival double house served as the home (1892-1922) of an outstanding African-American educator who established a national reputation as master of Cambridge's Agassiz School. She was the only African American in New England to hold the position of school master during her years of tenure. Harvard University president Charles Eliot called her the best teacher in New England.
