Statement of Significance (as of designation - December 8, 1976):
Established in January 1914, this was the United States' first permanent naval air station, first Navy pilot training center, and first U.S. naval installation to send pilots into combat.

Condition:
Loss of properties, and there for qualities relating to the NHL's significance (as a result of Hurrican Ivan in 2004), puts status at risk.

Hurricane Ivan (2004) damaged a large number of buildings in this district. The Navy's subsequent demolition of most of them had a devastating effect on the historic character of the district. Additional contributing resources were also demolished in recent years. The historic district originally had 55 contributing resources; only about 16 are still extant. This district should be reevaluated and considered for withdrawal of NHL designation because the qualities which caused it to be originally designated appear to have been lost or destroyed.

Recommendation/Change since last report:
If these buildings are demolished, the boundary of the NHL should be reevaluated.
